Thanksgiving Day Meal for the Elderly

NUEVA YORK – December 2, 2022On Thursday, November 24, the LCA held its traditional Thanksgiving dinner for seniors. This annual event had a very important feature this year, as it marked the 30th year that the LCA has been serving this traditional Thanksgiving dinner to seniors without family who live in our communities.

For the Center this is one of the most beloved projects. “The greatest satisfaction is having turned a usually gray day into a happy and colorful one, bringing much happiness to many older adults without families who live in the East of the Nation,” said Mario Tapia, President and Founder of the LCA. “In these twenty-nine years we have seen how other groups in our community, perhaps following our example, also celebrate Thanksgiving Day Meal for the elderly and for the less fortunate, which is particularly gratifying,” added Tapia.

With a generous corporate contribution and the support of volunteers from our community, the LCA has served Thanksgiving dinners to more than 50,000 seniors in New York, Newark, Philadelphia, New Brunswick, Boston, Orlando, Miami, Paterson, and Washington. , DC, since 1992. This year we identified seven (7) places where seniors partook of a delicious Thanksgiving dinner on November 24. As you know, many older people in our communities have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, so we planned a Thanksgiving dinner that would carry a message of hope and affection to the most frail members of our community.

Golden Age Awards

Every June, since 1993, the Latino Center on Aging (LCA) holds the Golden Age Awards presentation. This eventful gathering has taken place in highly prestigious landmarks of the City of New York: The Lincoln Center (1993), The United Nations (1994, 1995, and 1996), and until the year 2001 at The World Trade Center (107th Floor). Since 2003 was held at the Inter-Continental, The Barclay, 111 East 48th Street, NYC.  In Miami, last year’s event was held at the Sheraton Miami Airport Hotel.

The Golden Age Awards are given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Latino/Hispanic communities throughout the world. Awards are given for effective leadership, lifetime contributions, public policy initiatives, corporate contributions, and community involvement.
