New York, August 30, 2000.- Mario E. Tapia (In the box), president of the Centre Latin Gerontology(CGL) announced this morning the convening of a hemispheric convention of experts to discuss unusual growth of the number of elderly people on the continent and the increase in poverty, which is affected by the to most of them.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states that the The problem of hunger is in poverty and marginalization. The second lecture on gerontology will focus on this double challenge by bringing together experts University of California, University of Texas and University of Houston, USA Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León de México; Society of Gerontology of Puerto Rico; Costa Rica’s Costa Rican Social Security Fund, Hispanic Development Council of Canada and Centro del Adulto Mayor de La Plata, Argentina, among others, for together find possible solutions.
The conference is hosted by Philip Morris Companies Inc. It consists of a series of workshops and working sessions, conducted in Spanish. It will take place over the years 2000 and 2001, across the Americas on the following dates:
- Monterrey, Mexico (September 21-22, 2000)
- San José, Costa Rica (18-19 October, 2000)
- La Plata, Argentina (30 Nov. and 1st of Dec, 2000)
- San Juan, Puerto Rico (25-27 April 2001)
“Six years ago we organized the First Inter-American Conference on Gerontology in Chile. It has been pleasing to note that after that conference, several governments in the region They began to develop programs for the elderly,” said Mario E. Tapia, president and founder of the Latin Gerontological Center. “This second conference inter Hemispheric is particularly notable because experts from Canada to Chile will try to find solutions to crucial issues, very closely to those affected themselves.”

According to CGL estimates, the total number of Latinos currently living in the Americas is bordering 490 million people. Of these, 233 live in poverty. This translates. 48% of the population. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC),”” the number of Latin Americans and Caribbean living in poverty is Higher than ever.” Of the 490 million, there are 42 million Latinos over sixty (60) Of which 30 million live in poverty. The number of seniors will double in the next 50 years, according to the United Nations.
The Latin Gerontological Center is a non-profit organization based in New York, that seeks to improve the quality of life of the older Hispanic person, through education and the defense of their interests. The CGL has been selected to receive the prestigious award “Monseñor Raúl del Valle,” for his tireless work for the Latino elders, in What are the most needy. The delivery will take place on October 6 at the Rainbow Room Rockefeller Center for the Residence for Elders St Vincent de Paul, sponsored entity by the Archdiocese of New York.
